Healing Pages
“Healing Pages” is a book club developed by and for young adults with lived experiences of houselessness. Houselessness is an issue that disproportionately affects BIPOC and LGBT populations, and Healing Pages reflects these demographics by purposefully highlighting books that encourage critical thinking and deeper engagement with stories relevant to those identities. The ability to grow literacy skills and critical consciousness is often a luxury for young adults struggling to meet basic needs. For this reason, this book club is a paid activity, compensating participants for their thoughts and energy to encourage creative pursuits as profitable and valuable.
The Doorway Project is committed to serving young unhoused individuals through a healing-centered framework that integrates culture, civic action, and collective healing. This approach encourages youth to envision a world they want to live in—acknowledging harm without allowing it to define them. “Healing Pages” emphasizes inclusion, accessibility, and critical comprehension. By centering young people’s perspectives and through the “Creative Engagement” pillar of the Doorway Project, this accessible, low-barrier group invites young people to come together in community to discuss literature guided by minimal ground rules.
