Bloom

2021 - 2023

Bloom was piloted in 2022 as an urban farming paid internship made possible by a grant awarded to the Doorway Project by the City of Seattle Environmental Justice Fund and Bullitt Foundation. This program focuses on sector skills such as garden cultivation, harvesting, and urban farm management, while also allowing for the ongoing support of socio-emotional wellness for YA experiencing homelessness. The 10-hour a week program saw members of the cohort attending weekly seminars on topics surrounding social justice, tending to the Community Garden at the University District Food Bank, and existing in space centered on their own healing and reflection.

Participants of the 2023 year actively participated in weekly seminars around social justice and built a Community Garden at the University District Youth Center. They also embarked on an internship journey at Percussion Farms at the Beacon Hill Food Forest, further enhancing their hands-on experience and connection to sustainable practices.

While the grant that funded Bloom came to an end, the Doorway Project hopes to provide similar urban farming internships in the near future.
